Ansvaret for at bekæmpe klimaforandringer ligger hos os alle.

Greta Thunberg sues 5 countries

On 23rd September, Greta Thunberg together with 15 other children, have filed a legal complaint against 5 nations (Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, and Turkey) over the climate crisis through the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Thunberg stated that by ignoring the climate breakdown, world leaders were not keeping their promise to protect the rights of the children: “The message is that we have had enough”, she mentioned at a media conference held at UNICEF (see The Guardian article).

Unfortunately, the United States and China, which are the biggest culprits among the world’s top greenhouse-gas emitters, haven’t signed the section of the treaty allowing children to seek justice for infringements. As a result, China and the US were not included in the complaint.

The 2019 UN Climate Action summit

The 2019 UN Climate Action summit was designed to accelerate the ambition of countries to address the climate crisis and to take into consideration the urgent warnings of scientists. In order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, commitments to reduce planet-warming gases must be at least tripled and increased up to fivefold (see the United in Science Report).

However, the summit did not deliver any new plans regarding the radical cuts in greenhouse gas emmissions. India mentioned commitments made in the past, Germany  set out the end of coalmining in the country but only by 2038, China declined to put forward any new measures to tackle the climate crisis, while Brasil, the US, Canada, Australia were not present.

In their filing, the children, who come from 12 different nations, describe how their human rights have been violated. They call out each of the countries for their weak pledges to reduce greenhouse gases and say that their lives have already been impacted by the climate crisis. Accordingly, they ask that the countries to immediately adjust their climate goals and work with other nations to address the crisis.

Therefore, Greta Thunberg exposes that it is impossible to fight climate change and continue to measure national success by the rate of economic growth.

We are at crossroads

Many people who  support the idea that the Western world should continue to exploit the third world resources to satisfy their own selfish and greedy needs for materialism and overconsumption. They are also the same people who ignore scientific facts, and negative consequences which do not affect them directly or immediately.

In just 13 months, she become the image of a global movement that has pushed the crisis to the top of the news agenda and inspired millions to go out in the streets. Therefore, she represents the new generation which is the first to suffer the effects of the ecological and climate crisis. It is the last generation that can do something to stop the disaster.

However, the answer to fighting climate change lies in the need for collective action.  People need to recognize how serious the problem is right now, and how catastrophic it can turn out, if measures for improvement are not taken by world leaders and politicians. Greta represents a voice of reason in a time when greed and overconsumption seems to be the norm. Ignoring and marginalizing her would mean doing the same to every young person who stands up and exposes scientific truths.

The situation we find ourselves in at the moment can be described as standing at crossroads. One road leads to strong economic growth in the short-medium term, but creates damage which cannot be repaired in the long run. The other road includes some interruptions in the economic growth, is met with a lot opposition, but will eventually end up saving the planet in the long-term. We can only hope that for the future of our planet and for the future of humanity, the latter will be chosen.
